Goldfinch Visit

While looking out my kitchen window I saw a Goldfinch had decided to vist one of the sunflowers. Altho other birds will attempt to eat the seed directly from the sunflowers the Goldfinches seem to be the most persistent. You may have to look closely at the sunflower head to see him.

I was on my way to Bargin's Bills today (you can always find something there you never knew you were missing all your life) and I noticed how good the corn look. There has been better years but this year should be a good one. No doubt the price of corn will fall thru the bottom by the time it is picked.

When I have tried to teach my daughters about the Civil war I tried to relate it to things around us. At this time in 1863 the battle at Gettysburg was wrapped up and the Confederate troops were retreating across the Potomac at Williamsport. Now I figure the corn was growing pretty much like it is growing here so I would have them try an imagine if 20,000 troops came marching past your corn field and decided the corn was worth eating how you would be wiped out by the complete destruction of your corn field. Likewise if both sides decided to have a battle on your farm your entire farm would be destroyed. I figure the farms in the Gettsburg - Hagerstown area had about as much luck as a june bug in a flock of ducks.

Susan is in France

Yesterday Susan left for her trip to France. She is the one with the pink backpack. She is traveling with a tour lead by Judy Hearn, Susan's Art History teacher. She should be in Paris today. The tour package is from Explorica and their web site has a daily tour diary of the trip. The address is Diary
This should take you to a search site. Enter Baltimore for the Departure City, Enter July for the Departure Month, and enter Hearn for Group Leader. This should take you to the diary. They should have photos posted starting tonight or tomorrow.

They arrived about noon time, Paris time or 6:30 AM our time. Other people on her tour from Delmar; Ashley, Donna, Jo Ann, Katie, Holly, Katie, Kelly, Leslie, Melanie, Stacey, and Tasha.

France and Italy play Sunday for the World Cup in Football. Paris should shut down on Sunday for the game. If you can't be in Germany that day to watch the game than Paris or Rome seem to the best place to be for mass mobs of people cheering on the home team. The World Cup is at 1Pm our time or 7 Pm Paris time.

Bonfires and Frogs

Last night my daughters had a small bonfire and cook out in the backyard, between rain downpours. The usual group was here; the Wild Weber Women, Casie, Randie, Kara, etc. Between rolling waves of rain they cooked hotdogs and s'mores.

While swimming in the pool they discovered frogs. We seem to have a lot of frogs this year and they may have decided join the swim. When you sit outside at night you can bearly hear yourself think for them (the frogs) screaming.

Trash Day - What happened?

So who would have thought the trash would have been picked up on a holiday. I called town hall today to see if trash would be picked up only to get an answering machine that said it would be picked up on the 4th of July. I guess the trash people next week are going to have two weeks worth of trash. Why wasn't this in the newsletter?

The garden in July

Well it looks like I won't have tomatoes for the 4th of July. In spite of heat the rest of the garden is growing.

Laurel 4th of July Parade

Laurel is decked out today for the Fourth of July. I went to the parade today. It was a good parade, about an hour long and less 2% of it was fire trucks. The Delmar fire trucks were there. The politicians were out in force. With politicians come free stuff like flags, candy and fans.

It is a shame Delmar can't decorate a little for the Fourth of July. A parade might be too much but if we had one we could have double the politicians turn out since we are a bistate town. Still a few flags on the telephone poles would make the town look a little better.

Ernest Hemingway Died today

Ernest Hemingway blew his brains out with a shotgun in Ketchum Idaho on this date in 1961. Always a macho image person he was unable to overcome depression and took his life. Other members of Hemingway's immediate family also committed suicide, including his father, Clarence Hemingway, his siblings Ursula and Leicester, and later his granddaughter Margaux Hemingway. Of his books I always liked " To have and To have not". Hollywood made a movie with the title but had nothing to do with the book. For those of us who have visted his house in Key West, Florida you always remember the cats and the urinal in the yard he stole from Sloppy Joes bar. The cats, who number about 50 or 60, were left there based on his will. About half are Poldactyl cats ( extra toes).

My favorite Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko (who nows lives in the US) wrote a poem called "Encounter" which describes a chance encounter with Hemingway in Copenhagen. Altho not a long poem, it is too long to include in this blog.
