Yukio Mishima Died in 1970
Yukio Mishima (Kimitake Hiraoka) committed hara kiri today in 1970. He was a Japanese novelist who wrote fiction about postwar Japan. He wrote 40 novels, 18 plays, 20 books of short stories and 20 books of of essays.
The translated novels I have read by him are; The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea, and his four volume series called the The Sea of Fertility consisting of Spring Snow, Runaway Horses, The Temple of Dawn, and the Decay of the Angel. They are interesting works, if they were not I would have never made it thru the four book tetralogy of the Sea of Fertility.
His suicide seems by Western Standards to be gruesome. Besides the hara kiri tradition of sticking a knife in your belly it calls for having a second person present to witness it and to decapitate you. Masakatsu Koga was to performed the capitation but failed to complete it so Hiroyasu Koga had to complete the task. Now if you are laying there with a knife in your belly I would think the least thing you would want is for someone to screw up the final part that actually kills you. There is a poorly written article call I cut off the head of Yukio Mishima some may be interested in.

Phillips Seaford Restaurants
In the job want ads section of the "Daily Times" was an ad looking for 35 cook's helpers to work from March to November in Ocean City at Phillips Seafood Restaurants. The rate of pay was $6.41 an hour. It frankly makes me sick to think that a restaurant that charges the prices Phillips does for a meal would advertise a rate of pay such as this. It isn't even year round employment and benefits aren't mentioned. Does this just scream we are looking for foreign workers. Not only, in this age and time, is $6.41 and hour a poverty wage but anyone who has worked in Ocean City knows the additional expense of housing and transportation to work there. I guess I am not surprise Phillips would do that, they are the same company that trades on their name to sell you cans of foreign crab meat at the supermarkets. It makes Wal-Mart a premium employer compared to crap companies like this. Maryland state and local politicians spend their time sucking up to companies like this and highlight them as a local success. At the same time they continue to raise taxes. $6.41 an hour for 35 hours of work a week - think how you can survive on those wages. If that wage rate sounds fair to you, you probably have a job as a government worker or school teacher. Government jobs I view to be as virtually all welfare jobs and they are the highest paying jobs on the Delmarva.

Phillipsburg, NJ vs Easton PA
My neice, Erika, goes to Phillipsburg High School (The Stateliners) in New Jersey. Phillipsburg has an annual football game with Easton High School (The Red Rovers)in Pennsylvania. They have had this annual football game for the last 100 years. Phillipsburg and Easton are separated by the Delaware River and this year they had the game on the Pennsylvania side on Fisher Field at Lafayette College. This year their football game was broadcast on ESPN2 so we got to watch it. Phillipsburg lost 21 to 7, but when you have been playing one hundred years it is just another year and next year may go their way. Needless to say both communities are excite each year over this game.

Gift Giving
There was an interesting Associated Press article in today's News Journal. It was about a church in Memphis that donated a house to a Katrina victim couple. After receiving the house they sold it and moved back to New Orleans. Church members felt their generosity was abused. The couple said "Take it up with God".
Now this brings up the whole subject of gift giving. I feel when you give a gift for whatever purpose you give it away and give up any say in what is done with the gift. If you give money to someone and they blow it on alcohol, it is not for you to complain or whine about it - it was gift. If the Christmas present you took weeks selecting is stored in the attic of the gift receiver or you see it in that person's next yard sale - well it is the gift receiver possession, for him to do with however he wants. Go off in a corner and sulk and remember it was a gift. You can of course reconsider ever giving that person another damn thing but the gift was a gift.

JFK was shot today
On November 22 1963 President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was shot and killed in Dallas Texas. A popular thought is most people who were alive at that time can remember where they were that day and what they were doing at the time the announcement came thru he had been shot. It is easy for me to remember. I was in the military at the time and the military went to the highest defense status it had. I was restricted, for the upcoming week, to the small radar site outside of Ajo Arizona that I was stationed at. We were in a lock down situation where no one came in or left the radar station. No doubt waiting for the over throw of the United States government, as no one knew what was going on.
Today President Kennedy is portrayed as a popular President loved by the people. It wasn't so. The simple fact that he was shot should prove that point. As I recall when it was announced he was shot a classroom of teenagers in Texas applauded the announcement. Because of his youth he was popular with people in their 30's, however the people younger than 30 and the people older than 40 had different thoughts. I don't recall being impressed by him altho he did have good speech writers and to this day the quote of "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country" is one of my favorites. As history has proved out he was a whore chaser and who can believe or trust anyone who can't maintain the trust of a marriage commitment. I view President Clinton in this same light.

Drainage ponds
Drainage Pond for Delmar Storage
In Delmar if you have a swimming pool you have to have a 4 foot fence surrounding it. Yet this pond has been in Delmar about 6 months and there is no requirement or no concern to have any kind of fence other than the black plastic strip for environmental concerns. Why is that? Aren't you just as dead if you drown in a swimming pool as you are if you drown in a drainage pond?

Happy Birthday
As I think everyone knows,the song "Happy Birthday" is copyrighted. You can't sing the song in public without permission and you have to pay a royality. Otherwise it is copyright enfringement. The song was copyrighted in 1935 by Jessica Hill. Over the years the rights have been sold and today seem to reside with Times Warner Company. Their copyright is good until 2030. It is interesting when the song is sung in a movie, there at the end is the credits for: "Happy Birthday"
