Nellie Wilson Farlow

In the recent week we have had a number of people die. President Ford and James Brown are but two. But I didn't know either one of them personally so their deaths are but newspaper stories to me. I want to mention someone I did know, who died Christmas Eve. Her name was Nellie Wilson Farlow. She was 88. She was one of the Miller-Hasting clan that has a family reunion every year in August so I always saw her at least once a year. Until the last two years she always attended the reunions, ill health prevented her from doing so those other years. She was a very nice person. My father and her, who were cousins, always enjoyed talking at the reunion about growing up in the area west of Delmar. My mother said when they all rode the school bus in the 1930's, Nellie was the most beautiful one on the bus and all the boys were in love with her. The reunion in 2007 will occur as usual but we will all certainly miss her present.

Flu Time

Well we got thru Christmas but the day after Christmas I became sick with the stomach flu. I have been in bed for about three days and have only started moving around today. Last night, my youngest daughter came home from work early and on entering the house bent over and threw up in a trash can. She has been down in bed all day. Tonight, my wife came down with the same thing. My oldest daughter is thinking of going to visit friends for the next couple of days so she doesn't catch it.

Interesting Blog Site - Civil 3D Rocks

I have been reading an interesting blog site called Civil 3d Rocks It is written by Dana Breig Probert from somewhere in Delaware. She is a civil engineer type person. Her husband is an engineer and her parents are engineers, as are his parents. It has a nice nerd appeal with interesting outlooks. Altho most of it is aimed at some software package called Civil 3d it has interesting moments as when she calculated how many cans of Mountain Dew are on a semi-trailer truck and playing with her daughter's legos to build a model of a wastewater treatment plant. We also find when she has family gathering, since they are all engineers, they like to go on tours of local infrastructure, as wastewater treatment plants. It is great that someone has such a passion for their occupation that it consumes a great part of their life.

Turkey Leftovers and Biden

Well it is the day after Christmas and once again we are faced with Turkey leftovers and Senator Joe Biden announcing he will run for president. The leftovers are an annual event and for the first few reheating's and reinventing recipes aren't too hard to stomach again. Joe Biden is another story. Now I will say upfront I don't care that much for Senator Joe Biden. Joe Biden running for President seem to not only be an every four years tradition in Delaware, but more of a Delaware joke that Joe Biden is running for President. In a tradition of being charitable at Christmas time, I will say he can't be much worst than the others who will be running for President and what has been elected.

No Trash Pickup Today

Normally we would put our trash out to the curb for pickup today. The Town Council decided since town hall was closed, trash would be picked up on Wednesday this week. We will see what actually happens.

Jesus is born

Bethlehem, Judea - Authorities were today alerted by a concerned citizen who noticed a family living in a barn. Upon arrival, Family Protective Service personnel, accompanied by police, took into protective care an infant child named Jesus, who had been wrapped in strips of cloth and placed in a feeding trough by his 14-year old mother, Mary of Nazareth.

During the confrontation, a man identified as Joseph, also of Nazareth, attempted to stop the social workers...

Also being held for questioning are three foreigners who allege to be wise men from an eastern country. The INS and Homeland Security officials are seeking information about these who may be in the country illegally. A source with the INS states that they had no passports, but were in possession of gold and other possibly illegal substances...The chemical substances in their possession will be tested.
The United States National Threat Advisory was raised to High Risk (Orange). President Bush was transported by helicopter to an undisclosed safe location.

Christmas Eve and the Animals Talk

It is Christmas eve, the magic time is here. Now according to legend, Christ's birth occurred at exactly midnight tonight. At that time, the animals in the stable were given the gift of voice and all the animals knelt in their stalls to give praise to God for the birth of the Christ Child. This lasted several minutes until the wise men appeared and the only humans who heard the animals were Mary, Joseph and Jesus. To this day, each Christmas at Midnight the animals are given the gift of speech for a few minutes. Zoo keepers, kennels owners and poultry growers live in fear of this night.

My animals, at midnight do less praise of the Christ child and more bitching and complaining. They want better food, more food, more "off" time, more gadgets and toys to make their life interesting. For the most part they sound like reincarnated government workers. So tonight once again I will hear what they have to say.

As I become older I frankly enjoy Christmas less and less. Between Christmas gift buying, traffic, really rude people, and tacky yard displays I have more of a wish to just sit home and be left alone. But somewhere out there I still truly believe that there is a wonder and awe and magic to this time of year. You and I just have to look a little harder for it. This Christmas I hope is enjoyable for you in whatever ways you enjoy Christmas.

Merry Christmas For 2006!
