3rd US Infantry - Memorial Day

Each year on the Thursday before Memorial Day the 3rd US Infantry will place a small American flag in front of each of the more than 260,000 (and growing) gravestones at Arlington National Cemetery. They will then remain on guard to ensure the flags remain standing. It is a very moving sight to be in Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day Weekend.

The 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, stationed at Fort Myers, was formed in 1784. It is referred to as the "Old Guard". Today, it is a ceremonial unit that is honor Guard to the President, performs military ceremonies at the White House, the Pentagon and national memorials, in addition to maintaining the 24-hour vigil at the Tomb of the Unknowns. The soldiers serve as the mounted escorts for funerals at Arlington National, and some even act as escorts for women at White House dinners.

Arlington has an average of six full honor funerals every day. Six horses are hitched in pairs and they pull a 1918 caisson with the flag draped casket. The stables and equipment is next to the cemetery at Fort Myers. You can visit Fort Myers and walk thru the stables and on Sheridan Avenue is the Old Guard Museum. It is free and is an interesting place to visit.

The Salisbury Hospital

For the past week or so I have been going to the hospital in Salisbury to visit someone. The place is a pile of shit with the construction going on and it has had construction going on for the last forty years. Just to rub it in they have signs posted that says "a temporary inconvenience for permanent improvements". What a bureaucratic line of bullshit, there is no temporary to it and I doubt it is going to be improved. It sounds like something the town should post on Foskey Lane, another place that will never be done with construction road cuts.
