The Changing Downtown

Well it came as a surprise to me, as it did to a great many people, that Linda's Railroad Cafe is closing. Not being a regular customer there I heard it on the TV news. So where will the old men that form the coffee circle at Linda go now? Maybe she got tire of the LeCates Building on the end of the row making the downtown look bad.

I also see the Top Hat Coffee Shop has changed to a mini Mexican market. Is this the same store that recently closed, out by the IGA/Foodrite .

And finally who is suppose to cut the grass by the the railroad caboose? A code enforcement citation would normal be sent out by the town, if it was a resident property. The Women of the New Century Club of Delmar planted "knockout" roses in front of the recently painted caboose and they water and care for the roses, but obviously the tall grass distracts from the view of what beautification that has been done for the downtown.

Comments:
It's come down to this, unless you need a haircut, a beer, postage stamps, pose the kids in front of the caboose for this year's Christmas card, or swing by Howard's house for lunch, there's no need to go into downtown Delmar. What a shame! Our culture has changed so much.

Nostalgia still calls out for the small downtown's of yesteryear, even though they're not so practical any more. By the way Howard, what's for lunch? I'm really hungry.

I don't know Uncle Paul after you talked about the bottle of wine I bought you;
" I had to fake nice, when you brought another (re-gifted), cheap bottle of wine to our dinner, so you're going to listen to my viewpoint."

Neverless zucchini is still high on the Lunch List and dollar watermelon

As my dear, departed, grandfather used to say: "Yummers McGummers".

Check out the weeds around the new Gordy park sign. Bes Buds did a nice job of landscape there and the town lets it turn to crap.

I received this email about Linda's Cafe. Since the sender didn't leave it as a comment I will reprint it without his name as he may not want to be identified in public;

"I just wanted to drop you a note about Linda's Railroad Cafe. Her closing the restaurant is a great loss to the town of Delmar. She provided more than just a place to get a good meal at a good price. I have been going there on and off for years depending on where I was working and what schedule I was on. Despite the tuff front that she puts on she has a heart of gold. I am sure that a lot of people don't know of the special little things that she has done for people in the town over the years. In the mid 1980's when my grandparents were still well enough to live at home but disabled enough that the everday things like grocery shopping and cooking meals were getting hard for them to do, Linda would deliver a meal to their house every day when she left work. Same price as if you ate in, no charge for delivery. I remember one of the men that used to come to the restaurant and didn't have any local family to check on him, Linda would stop at his house and make sure that he was taking his medication correctly. When he got to the point that he had to go into the nursing home she would pick him up several times a week and take him to the restaurant to be with his friends. These are just a few of the things that I know of and I am sure that there are many, many more that I don't.

She put in a lot of years of extremly early mornings and late nights in running the restaurant and deserves her retirement. I wish her all the best!"
