1967 Astronauts Die In Fire

On January 27th 1967 a flash fire occurred in the command module of the Apollo/Saturn space vehicle and three astronauts, Lt. Col. Virgil I. Grissom, Lt. Col. Edward H. White, and Roger B. Chaffee died in this fire. The cause of the fire was never determined but it was felt it was caused by a momentary power failure followed by several arcs but no single ignition source of the fire was conclusively identified. Numerous Memorials, Schools, Streets, Planetariums, hospitals, stars, and postage stamps have been named for these three astronauts and most school children have no idea who they were.
