POLITICAL CORRECTNESS BILL INTRODUCED

Picked up from Delaware House of Representatives' e-Newsletter

POLITICAL CORRECTNESS BILL INTRODUCED

House Bill 91 - Sponsored by: Rep. Heffernan & Sen. McDowell - This bill seeks to require that all new state laws and publications avoid language considered disrespectful and/or offensive to individuals with disabilities.

The sponsors of the bill say the measure is part of a national People First Language (PFL) movement that is designed to promote dignity and inclusion for people with disabilities. PFL specifies that the order of terms used to describe any individual places the person first and the description of the person second. For example, a term such as "the disabled" would be re-phrased as "people with disabilities."

A violation of the bill would not be grounds to invalidate any new state law or publication. This legislation would also not apply to terms required by federal law, regulation or state statute.

Status: Pending action in the House Administration Committee.
