Delmar Middle School Winter/Christmas Chorus Concert 2011

I walked up to the High School Last night to watch and hear the Middle School Winter Christmas Chorus Concert. Yes I walked. Altho we talk about the criminal element in Delmar it is still safe to walk the streets at night - at least on the Delaware side of town. I also saw some very nice Christmas light displays on the walk there.

I arrived about 6:45 and it was standing room only. I finally found a place way way back in the cafeteria. The Programs were long gone by the time I arrived, however some kind person slipped me one and for those parents who did get one I have scanned it and placed it in this post. By clicking on the photo to enlarge it and printing it you can have a copy for that memory box of yours. You can also see the names of the chorus members.

I thought the auditorium was packed but then the 5th and 6th grade chorus came on stage and it was SRO on the stage also. Wow! the 5th and 6th grade chorus is about 140 kids. How does the director, David Smith, do it? School started three months ago and he managed to get this group to sing as a unit.

The 5th and 6th grade chorus did five numbers. They were; 'Nuttin for christmas', 'Holiday Lights', 'Christmas Crazes,' 'Frosty,' 'Scrooge!Scrooge!Scrooge!', 'Winter Troika Ride', and 'Gonna catch That Santa.' Needless to say they were all sung in an excellent manner.

The three songs I thought were best done were; 'Frosty','Winter Troika Ride' and 'Gonna Catch That Santa.'

Their version of Frosty had more of a hip beat to it.

'Winter Troika Ride' had a rhythm that clearly produced the sound of hoof beats of a horse pulling a sled.

'Gonna Catch That Santa' had a choreograph hand movement which always waked people up plus the unexpected ooh oohs.

With only a brief pause the 5th and 6th grade chorus exited the stage and the 7th and 8th grade chorus came on. When the 140 members of the 5th and 6th grade chorus left so did a quarter of the parents.

Well the 7th and 8th grade chorus was almost as large as the 5th and 6th grade Chorus. Coming in at about 70 students it means total Middle School students taking Chorus is over 200.

The 7th and 8th grade Chorus did four numbers; 'It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year', 'March of the King', 'Keep On Following The Star', and 'The Twelve Groovy Days Of Christmas'.

Since this group was older they did more moving to the music and finger clicking.

Of Course all the songs were performed brilliantly, did you have any doubts?

The initial song was marred slightly by people in the audience moving about and I assume leaving to locate their 5th or 6th grade chorus member.

I liked 'The Twelve Groovy Days Of Christmas' best as it had an unexpected Woo, Woo, Woo thrown in thru out the song.

Mr. Smith said two members of the chorus were chosen for the Delaware State Jr. High All State Chorus. Congratulations Katherine Schell and Raekwon Deshields.

All of this was done is just over an hour and did I mention it was FREE, amazing. I watched it and still managed to walk back home and catch the prime time TV shows (which by the way were repeats and not nearly as interesting as the chorus Concert)
