Comments On A Hot Thursday In July

In Maryland from 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, August 9, through midnight on Saturday, August 15, 2015
clothing and footwear priced $100 or less will be exempt from Maryland’s six percent sales tax.  Since you would be hard pressed to find American made goods in these categories I think we can call this  "make the Chinese rich week"

For more information go to;

Also let those in Maryland remember that if you purchase items in "tax free" Delaware you still have to pay Maryland sales tax.
Every time you purchase taxable tangible goods from businesses outside of Maryland, whether in person, over the phone, or on the Internet, the purchase is subject to Maryland's 6 percent use tax or 9 percent alcoholic beverage tax if you use the merchandise in Maryland. Maryland' use tax protects Maryland businesses from unfair competition. Local businesses would be at a competitive disadvantage if consumers were entitled to a 6 or 9  percent discount on items purchased from out of state businesses
If you make a tax-free purchase out of state and need to pay Maryland's 6 percent use tax, file the Consumer Use Tax Return with your payment, by the appropriate due date. If you do not pay Maryland's use tax on purchases made out of state, you could be liable for penalties and interest in addition to the tax due.

It is hot

I am sure we all have a weakness for a certain kind of sweets, one of mine is Tastykake peanut butter Kandy Kakes (They were introduced as tandy cakes in 1931 and I still call them Tandy cakes but there seems to be a Tandy bakery somewhere that thought the name infringed on them). Recently I ignored my diet and had one, actually a couple of them, but they tasted bad not anywhere like the ones I had last year.  As it turns out since Tastykake was purchased by the Flowers Foods Company things have gone down hill.  Investigating a peanut butter Kandy kakes box I found

they now have a chocolate flavored coating.  Going on line I found an older kandy Kake box
Which shows before they were milk chocolate coated.
So there you have milk chocolate vs a chocolate flavoring that is disgusting.  I am not saying Obama had a direct influence on this change but it did happen during his administration. The Flag, racism, homosexuality, Muslims, guns and now Tastykake - when will it end?
The Delmar Maryland election for a mayor and two commissioners is approaching.  It is still July but before you know it that dead line for filing of September 14th will be upon us.
Number 2664 was in town this week It is a SD70M-2
My wife and I did go down to Chincoteague yesterday.  We stopped by the Island creamery for a scoop or so of Marsh Mud
Usual line on pony penning day that went out the door
This is Autumn our official ice cream scooper going down deep
I read somewhere that in France two scoops of ice cream is called les gourmands and anything above two is called les Americains.
But the main reason for going was the oyster sandwich
They are always good - the best on the shore - this year they were a little over cooked. Still good however.

and of course the ponies
Very few Confederate flags were displayed at pony penning, it might well be because Chincoteague went with the Union side during the Civil war instead of the Confederate side.
A bit of trivia; when people first settled the west and Alaska, Glass for the windows of their cabins was hard to come by.  One substitute they used was empty glass pickle and canning jars stacked in the window with mud and moss chinked around them.
The books I have read over the past couple of weeks seem to occur in the Northern part of Africa. I read "sugar street" by Naguib Mahfouz, took place in Egypt,  it was okay but I find when a book has more than five characters I seem to get  lost on it.  I have read others of his books and they were better.
A Nelson deMille book called "The Quest" which was a nice change from his usual characters.  Simply put it was search for the Holy Grail in Ethiopia with many references to the Italians in the 1930's invading the country.   President Obama is there now so I am sure the country will go to hell even more than what it is.  The third book was "A Fez of the Heart: Travels around Turkey in Search of a Hat" by Jeremy Seal.  The book has an interesting amount of trivia about the Fez and a travelogue of Turkey.

Making Delmar Proud

A man faces his eighth DUI offense following his arrest in Georgetown.

Police say a driver called Friday afternoon about a vehicle that was swerving ahead of him on East Market Street, and that the driver appeared to be leaning over in his seat.

The vehicle was stopped just west of The Circle, and the smell of alcohol led to field sobriety tests.

56-year-old Frank Grazier of Delmar was found to have a blood alcohol level of point-242 percent.

Police also learned that he had seven prior convictions for driving under the influence and that his driver's license was suspended.

Grazier now is charged with felony DUI 8th offense and driving with a suspended license.

He was being held at the Sussex Correctional Institution on $15,000 bond.
