Happy Thanksgiving

Another good Thanksgiving, my brother and his wife joined us

my daughter was home from the Western Shore but the other daughter had to work at the Ocean City Police Department.

Too much food

I think it was 50 years ago, in 1965, that a couple guys tried to take trash to the dump on Thanksgiving day only to find:

so they dumped their trash on a hillside resulting in an arrest and a fine.

This in turn resulted in an 18 minute song, more or less depending on the version, that can best be described as white people rap music in 1966.    Plus  a movie by the same name that had very poor acting in it and I talked about it a few years back

Alice's Restaurant
By Arlo Guthrie

This song is called Alice's Restaurant, and it's about Alice, and the
restaurant, but Alice's Restaurant is not the name of the restaurant,
that's just the name of the song, and that's why I called the song Alice's

You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant
You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant
Walk right in it's around the back
Just a half a mile from the railroad track
You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant

Now it all started two Thanksgivings ago, was on - two years ago on
Thanksgiving, when my friend and I went up to visit Alice at the
restaurant, but Alice doesn't live in the restaurant, she lives in the
church nearby the restaurant, in the bell-tower, with her husband Ray and
Fasha the dog. And livin' in the bell tower like that, they got a lot of
room downstairs where the pews used to be in. Havin' all that room,
seein' as how they took out all the pews, they decided that they didn't
have to take out their garbage for a long time.

We got up there, we found all the garbage in there, and we decided it'd be
a friendly gesture for us to take the garbage down to the city dump. ...

and today he is still singing that song.

eventually Alice's Restaurant went bankrupt in 1979

So as Thanksgiving continues into the night I continue trying to get smart by following Cliff's advice.

Tuesday Morning

What's For Breakfast?

The Breakfast Menu from The Barnum Hotel in 1863.  No scrapple?
Obviously people in the 1860's had a wider range of breakfast selections, instead of bacon and eggs, also notice they serve Breakfast wine.  The wine is extra but the food was usually part of the price of the room.
Founded by David Barnum in the 1800's, the Barnum's Hotel on Calvert and Fayette Streets in Baltimore, Maryland was famous for good living throughout the civilized world and quoted as "the most comfortable of all hotels in the United States", by Charles Dickens, a guest in 1842.

Daesh or ISIS

Just to add to the confusion in recent days ISIS is being referred to as Daesh.  Daesh” is the Arabic acronym for ISIS.  In Arabic, their name is “Dawlat al-Islamiyah fi’al-Iraq wa Bilaad al-Sham”, making Daesh the loose acronym.  ISIS hates being called Daesh, as it strips them of what they claim to be their “Islamic” legitimacy, is very disrespectful in Arabic, and sounds similar to several words with negative connotations, such as the word “Da’es”, which means “one who crushes/stomps something underfoot”.  It’s been used in the Middle East for over a year now, but more recently has been used in the West as well.

So now you know
